Inverness

Inverness was the third city we stayed in on our tour. It is often called the gateway to the highlands, as it is a good jumping off point for traveling into that region. It is a larger city, which we thought had a bit less charm than the other places we stayed. This opinion may have been influenced by the large amount of construction going on in the city while we were there and the drearier weather that we had. Inverness seemed to have more businesses and regular stores and fewer specific "tourist attractions" that might draw visitors. I'm glad it was included in the tour, because culturally it felt like it was probably what modern day, working class Scotland feels like. We enjoyed walking around the city and found it easy to listen to music in pubs if you wanted to. There was also a nice park on the outskirts of town you could walk to where you would find many locals walking their dogs and taking their kids out to play. Both days that we stayed in Inverness were long touring days, so we did not have much time to explore the city, but the hotel was right in the center of town, so it was easy to walk about.

Hotel

Our hotel in Inverness was called the Royal Highland Hotel. It was a great old building located right in the center of town within walking distance to everything, with cozy rooms, nice decorations, and some of the oddest art collections we have ever seen. Around every corner was a conversation piece! We really enjoyed our stay here. We were always surprised with just how nice each of our hotels were, but more than anything with how simple the checking in and out process was made by our guide so we could get on to more important things. That was a huge time saver!

Speaking Scottish

"Inver" means "river mouth" in gaelic, so Inverness literally means the "Mouth of the river Ness"

History in the making

Ok, well to be honest, this isn't exactly what you would call history in the making, unless you are a huge Downton Abbey fan. Downton Abbey's season 5 premiere occured while we were in Inverness. This was a major deal for those of us on the tour, as it premiers in Britain months in advance of its premiere in America. Everyone was excited to watch the first episode before their friends. Our group made plans to get together in one room to watch it, but unfortunately the two of us had to duck out of the gathering because we were still on season 1 and didn't want a spoiler.
