Tour Day 11: Hallstatt

On to romantic Austria

If I'm quite honest, we were more excited about the Germany and Switzerland portions of our trip and thought that Austria would be a good bonus. We had more familiarity with Germany and Switzerland and we never knew anyone in our personal lives who had been to Austria. All three destinations in Austria totally blew us away! They ended up being three of our favorite destinations yet! Hallstatt was the most picturesque place we went, and we knew from pictures we had seen that we were in for a treat.

We loaded up onto the bus and made a quick stop to view the famous gazebo from the Sound of Music. Hans made us laugh when he told us that they keep the gazebo locked now because too many tourists went right through the glass while dancing around on the benches inside trying to recreate the famous scene! We all had a chance for a photo op and then we were on to Hallstatt! We stopped on the way at a quaint little Austrian town to stretch our legs and get some coffee.

When we arrived in Hallstatt, there was a private boat waiting for us to give us a tour of the lake before dropping us off near our hotel. Walking into Hallstatt is like walking into a postcard. Unbelievable! It was sprinkling lightly, but luckily the rain held off until the end of the boat ride. The cloudy skies with the swirling fog made for an even more dramatic and beautiful landscape. We couldn't get enough of the eye candy! We were even more excited when we got to our hotel and saw our beautiful room - our favorite of the trip! We had a quick lunch with some of our tour mates and then headed out to explore the winding alleys that make up this lovely town. Many of the tour members went up to the salt mine for a tour, but we wanted to spend the day outside. We visited the bone chapel where the bones that were dug up from the graveyard due to space constraints were decorated and stored. I thought it might be a bit creepy, but it was really neat. We spent the afternoon exploring and taking photos. Since this was a "vacation from a vacation" day without any specific plans, I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

We ended the day with a delicious group meal, complete with apple strudel and a friendly cat who wandered in looking for treats. We wandered through town after dinner for one last look at the town at twilight and ended up with some of our favorite pictures of the trip! Tomorrow we would sadly head out to our last destination of the tour - Vienna.
